Dried bean harvests and our beany plans for 2021
In planning for the 2020 growing season we posted a discussion about growing beans for drying. We have always grown Borlotti and Butter beans; saving own our seed, but we decided it would be a great challenge to see if we could expand our range grown on our plot in Manchester!
Beans for drying: a discussion
Beans, sometimes called “pulses”, are the edible seeds of the legume family. In the UK the term ‘bean’ often includes the pods of the legume plant; runner beans and French beans are popular on allotments all over the country, but growing for eating the seed is less common.
I have become quite interested in growing bean seeds as they store well, are very low maintenance crops and are a good source of protein. Here I discuss our experiences so far of growing beans for drying and my plans to expand the varieties of beans for drying that we grow for 2020.Second Cropping
Second cropping is planting a second harvest in one area within the growing season. It makes the most of your space and extends the season. If done well you can supply fresh veggies for most of the year. In this video we discuss what we are sowing in mid July for planting out when early crops are harvested.
